How To

How to drive a nails in wood

First, choose the right size and type of tool to drive a nail through wood. The most common types of hammers are claw hammers, sledgehammers, mallets, ball peen hammers, and hatchets. Each type of hammer has its pros and cons. For example, a claw hammer works best when you want to hit something hard, like nails; however, it's difficult to control precisely where the blow lands. A sledgehammer is great for hitting large areas at once, but it's too heavy to use effectively for smaller tasks.

Place your hand flat on the side of your chosen hammer so that the handle rests in your palm. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. Keep your wrist relaxed and the hammer straight up. Next, swing the hammer toward the ground and aim for the nail's center. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

When you're ready to start driving the nail, hold the hammer in front of you close to your body. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Keep your focus on the tip of each nail. Swing the hammer forward, and then move the hammerhead. Repeat this action several times, gradually increasing the speed of the swing. Once you've mastered the technique, try adding power to your swings. Then, raise the hammer from your shoulder to bring it down. This way, you'll be able to put more energy behind your blows.

Once you have made the first hole, remove your hammer. To pull out the remaining nails, use a screwdriver or pry bar. To prevent splitting the wood, ensure you keep the nail heads flush against the board's surface.
