How To

Tips on how to drive a nail in wood

To drive a nail into wood, the first step is to select the right size and type hammer. The most popular types of hammers include claw hammers as well as mallets and ball peenhammers. Each type of hammer comes with its advantages and disadvantages. A claw hammer works well when you're trying to hit nails with a heavy hammer. However it is difficult to precisely control where the blow hits. A sledgehammer is great for hitting large areas at once, but it's too heavy to use effectively for smaller tasks.

Once you have chosen the right hammer for you, put your hand flat against its side so that it rests comfortably in the palm of your hand. Grip the handle firmly, but don't squeeze it so tightly that you hurt yourself. You should hold the hammer straight-up, with your wrist still relaxed. Now, move the hammer towards the center of the nail by swinging it back. You should feel the impact of your hammer hitting the nail. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

You can now drive the nail by holding the hammer to your body. To ensure that the nail is perpendicular on the surface of the wooden floor, position it. Keep your attention on the tip. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. Repeat this action several times, gradually increasing the speed of the swing. When you are confident with the technique, add power to your swings. You can hold the hammer over your shoulder and forcefully bring it down. This will help you put more energy behind each of your moves.

Once you've nailed the first hole, remove the hammer from the nail. To pull out the remaining nails, use a screwdriver or pry bar. To prevent splitting the wood, ensure you keep the nail heads flush against the board's surface.
