Hark Woodturner
The woodturning program at the Harvard University's Mather Building began around eight years ago when a resident tutor approached Hark after a class. Hark said yes to the offer and agreed to teach the class at Harvard. After several failed attempts at teaching the course at Harvard he finally found a used lathe in the basement from a neighboring building. He began his first Harvard class that spring. Students from all Harvard Houses can now attend classes in the woodturning studio. He also continues to teach woodturning at weekends.
In addition to teaching classes, Arthur and Pamela have traveled to woodworking symposiums and trade shows in search of new audiences for their work. They have hosted a variety of internationally renowned artists as their guests. Their woodturning workshops have featured a range of artists and styles, from emerging to famous, and the studio has sent a Knight and Commander to the Norwegian Woodturning Cruise, held every three years.
Tools
Safety gear is a must-have in any woodturning studio. You may want to invest in eye protection, safety goggles, or even a visor to keep the glare of sand off your face. You can also invest in sharpening gear to keep your tools in good shape. In order to sharpen the blades of your lathe blades you will need safety gear.

A drill, a wrench, and a banjo are three of the most important tools you will ever need. The banjo lets you slide your tool along the lathe bed supporting the toolrest. This allows you the best possible position for your turning tool. While the banjo can be adjusted, most modern lathes feature a locking mechanism. These tools will allow you to create your own creations.
Techniques

If you are just beginning, a woodturning workshop is a great place to start. A workshop will cover everything you need to know, including safety gear and choosing the right tools. You will also have hands-on experience with a lathe. The course will teach you how to properly use tools and allow you to try out different techniques. Depending on the skills you already possess, your projects can range from carving mallets to making bottle stoppers and bowls.
Class size
A beginner's workshop at Durham's woodturning studio is the perfect place for those who are just starting out in woodturning. During this class, you will learn how to use tools, sharpening tools, and basic technique. This class will include several projects. Safety is the main focus of the instructor. Please bring your own protective equipment and a face mask.
You will be able to concentrate on the individual student's learning by having a small class. The instructors will have plenty of time to answer questions and provide individual attention. It is common for there to be only six students per class. You can expect to learn at a relaxed pace. Most of the classes are project-based. They will usually last for a few days. Private lessons are available for advanced students who wish to learn specific techniques.
Prices

It is a costly venture to open your own woodturning shop. The cost of supplies and equipment can easily reach several thousand dollars. The best way to save money on these expenses is by selling your products at a reasonable price. Selling your finished products can increase your profits by up to three times. High-end pieces can be a great way for you to market your art and generate profit, but it is also possible to sell products at a lower cost. While high-end items may take longer to produce, you can always sell simple items in this price range. In fact, they can sell out within the first day of a two-day art show.
If you are new to woodturning, a class will teach you the basics of the art. This class will teach you how to use your tools safely and how to properly sharpen them. This will allow you to move on to more difficult projects and teach you more advanced tools and techniques. A typical cost for an introductory class in woodturning is $75 for Mather residents and Harvard associates. All materials are included in this price. A list of nearby hotels will be included.

How To
How to make wood joints
This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. Here are the steps
-
Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
-
Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
-
Glue Together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
-
Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried completely, you can clamp the pieces together until they are flush.
-
Trim Joinery. Trim any excess wood surrounding the joint once the glue has dried completely.
To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
