Ball in a Cage Carvings

easy read tape measure with 16ths

It's a unique carving that features a ball inside a cage. Although this may appear like a complicated carving, it is actually a simple one that requires only one block. In fact, the two objects are intertwined. We'll be discussing the materials and techniques used to carve this object, as well as the differences between the later and early carvings. Find out more about the different types that are used for cage carvings.

Techniques

First, cut the block to form the ball. It should be three inches in diameter. Next, mark the block with pencils about one-half an inch apart at both ends. Continue to cut the block until it slides easily along the rails. To round it, make small cuts at both ends. With a handsaw, cut the remaining wood. Take care not to take out too much.

After you've cut the cube into the desired shape, you can make a template. You can trace the squares onto a cube with a paper straightedge. Connect the squares' corners by using connecting line. You can also use a depth gauge to measure the distance from the template to the cutout. This distance will allow you to calculate the inner cage's depth. The finished piece should be about two-thirds the height of the original cube.

Materials

Ball-in-a-cage carvings are an unusual and fun project. This piece of woodcarving can seem hard at first but is actually quite simple to make. Each object is carved from a single block of carving material. The cage and ball are intertwined using the same technique. You'll quickly find the carving process easy and fun.

First, make sure you have a block or piece of wood with the correct diameter and length. For this purpose, you will need a block of wood that measures 3 1/2" in length by 3 1/2" in square. Next, mark the length of the block with pencil, leaving a half-inch gap at each end. Make sure to remove pencil marks when cutting the block. Then, carve individual bars to create the desired shape.

These are some examples of carvings that depict a ball in the cage you can gift as a present.

Later and early carvings

The ball in a cage was an iconic Civil War object. It was part of a larger Civil War collection. The ball inside a cage is approximately 4 1/2 inches wide and made from one piece of wood. It could have been used to keep a soldier busy. These were quite popular in the 1840s. However, the practice has declined over time. We will look at early and later balls in a cage carvings.

It is rare to find balls with intricate carvings. They typically measure between 2+3/4 to 3 inches across and come with three to 160 knobs. Some are completely bare and have no ornamentation while others are heavily decorated with intricate patterns. Some ball in a cage carvings are ornamented with knobs and can include several designs. One knob may be shaped like the head of a Lion.

FAQ

Where can you buy your woodworking materials?

There are many places you can get everything you need, and you don't have to go far. You could go to your local hardware shop or visit websites such as Amazon.com.

You can also check garage sales and flea markets for old furniture and other materials you can reuse.

Can this be a way to make money?

Yes! In fact, most woodworkers already have it. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), woodworkers earned a median annual salary of $34,000 in May 2012. This is more than the national average of 31,000 per annum.

What kind of tools do carpenters use?

Carpenters most often use a tool called a hammer. The hammer is used to pound nails into wood. They can also use it to hold the pieces together as they work on a project. Other tools include clamps.

How often do I need to buy new supplies

Some tools will need to be replaced over time. Hand tools will need to be sharpened regularly. Power tools will require replacement parts every so often. To avoid buying too much at once, try to spread your purchases out over a few months.

Where can I start woodworking?

It is best to actually build furniture to learn how to make it. While you will need tools, mistakes are inevitable, but you will learn the ropes if you persevere.

You should first choose the project you wish to complete. You could make something as simple or complex as a box. Or you could build a whole entertainment center. Once you've decided on a project, find a local woodworker who specializes in that kind of work. Ask him or her for advice on what tools you'll need and where to find them. Perhaps you could ask if there is someone else who does this type of work.

How To

How to make wooden joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We will be using the "pocket-hole joint", which involves drilling holes in wood and then gluing them together. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will help ensure that the joint won't split later.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue to both sides of the wood. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Secure the pieces together. Once the glue has dried, clamp the pieces together so they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
